£15bn ‘Crossrail of the North’ given backing by Chancellor
7th Aug 2014

07 August 2014
While debate continues concerning the controverial HS2 project, George Osborne has this week given his support to an enhancement of transport service across five of the Northern England’s biggest cities.  The ‘One North’ report found that the north is in great need of faster rail links and proposes a more frequent and interconnected rail service which includes a 125mph trans-Pennine rail-link.
Osborne said that the proposals were “affordable” and that they would transform the economy of northern England with a “Pathway to this Northern Powerhouse”.  The report proposes widespread improvement of road and rail infrastructure coupled with the bringing forward of Phase One of HS2 to aid this network which aims to alleviate the much maligned north-south economic divide.
We will hear about the next stage of the plans for the so-called “Crossrail of the North” in the Chancellor’s upcoming Autumn Statement.
